I just bought Stephanie’s Practice Hack Stack game and IT’S AWESOME! Her ideas are so creative, fun, and versatile. I already have some great ideas to implement in lessons!” – Erin S., Private Flute Teacher

“These practice tips are awesome! Thank you for helping me get my practice motivation back during this weird time with Covid! 💗” – Micaela R., Graduate Student in Vocal Performance & Flutist

“This game works! I was frustrated by a section of a piece and was really struggling to get my lowest note to sound. I went through the hacks one by one. When I got to the “interpretive dance” technique, even just imagining a dance, my low notes just opened up! I was amazed!! It was kind of scary, like magic! Really cool!” – Elizabeth P., Private Flute Teacher

I’m so excited! My students and I are going to have a blast with these! Thanks so much for helping me get my head back in the practice room game!” – Caroline N., Flutist, Saxophonist, & Future Band Director

About the Game

It’ll probably be no surprise to you to hear that I created my Practice Hack Stack game for my students!

Back in 2018, I was stuck on a common problem that both music students and private lesson instructors experience. A pervasive issue that severely limited the progress musicians made in their personal practice:

Musicians don’t know HOW to practice!

They know what to practice and why to practice, but the how is a lot more complex.

I would teach my students practice techniques in lessons, but they were struggling to remember to use the strategies when they got home. And sometimes, my more stubborn students would resist practicing in new and more helpful ways because they weren’t convinced they worked.

(And I can understand because I used to be that student who always wanted to know why!)

I wanted a way to share my practice hacks that would be fun, easy to use, and explained WHY they work!

My twin sister happened to be designing a card game at the time (we both love games), and with a jolt of excitement and inspiration, my creative idea lightbulb lit up like it had a million watts.

I realized I could create a music card game to use in lessons! Students could then take the cards and use the practice hacks at home in-between lessons. If students couldn’t decide which practice technique to use, no problem! They couldn’t go wrong with simply drawing a hack from the stack!

This game idea was incredibly exciting to me because I was brand new to gamification at the time! I spent weeks perfecting all of my very best practice techniques and explaining them with crystal clear wording.

It was very important to me that I explained why each practice hack works, so students would learn which practice techniques would best solve each kind of problem! But the cards also needed to be quick and easy to read and use.

The Practice Hack Stack game was born!

This is the first time I’m offering the Practice Hack Stack game to the public. I created this game for my students and it took me a whole 2 years to even think to offer this game to other musicians and teachers! But now that I am, I couldn’t be happier to share this game with you!!

Have fun and game on,

Stephanie
